I would like to use this post to invite anyone who has something to say about shows he/she has recently seen to comment. (Recent shows: Betty's Summer Vacation, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Some Girl(s), MacBett.)
Whether a performer or spectator, how was the experience? What did you think of the show? Feel free to post anything!
Also, I would suggest friending Arts for Ohio on Facebook. With regular updates and messages, this friend will keep you informed on many of the arts performances on the OU campus.

This is a great idea for a site! I saw Rocky Horror Picture show last week and it was awesome. I love that the student theater group does that every year. I didn't expect to have a show like this so far from a city. Great job performers!
I went to see MacBett this weekend, and thought it was awesome. The show -- aesthetically and content-wise -- was a war on the senses. Bright colors, larger-than-life set pieces (that is, a tank!), and the abundance of energy the cast dedicated to the show all almost overwhelming.
And the show was funny! I mean, usually it was "haha, oh my goodness, I don't think I should be laughing about this," but laughter it was!
The director and actors did an admirable job of creating a world and then constructing the show within in the rules of that world. Ridiculous -- yes, but also, in a strange way, believable within the reality of the child's-playground world.
I really enjoyed this show. Though long and very uncomfortably strange at times, I plan on seeing the play again. I think that the show would be a very different experience from a different seat in the Forum theater.
Great performances, actors! Well directed and executed, so kudos to you designers and run crew. And hurray for free theater shows!!
I worked on the production of Macbett, and it was a pain and a pleasure.
I haven't yet seen an actual production of it -- just rehearsals -- but I heard it was a packed house -- which, in my experience, is quite rare. I'm really pleased that Arts for Ohio is doing the Free Admission for OU students. A lot of people who wouldn't normally go to a theater show, are going now -- and they're not as scared to go, since it's free and they don't really have anything to lose.
I also saw Macbett and fell absolutely in love with it! I was amazed by the incredible design aspect, from the bombed-out children's playground to the inclusion of the tank as a character. I thought the acting and direction was just perfect, and though set in a very strange world, I understood the commentary on war itself.
And I totally laughed, too! There were some wonderfully bizarre moments in the show where I could not help but laugh.
I really liked the inclusion of some of the more abstract characters, such as the Butterfly Hunter and the Woman on the cell phone. I thought the symbolism of an innocent child (symbolizing peace) toying with war was fascinating, especially when the tank ultimately aims itself at her. I also liked how the Woman was completely ignorant of the war - perhaps to the point of profiting off of it, as seen with her shopping bags.
It was such a dynamic, incredible production, and I would love to see it again - for FREE! YAY ARTS FOR OHIO!
P.S. Yay for the comment on Rocky Horror Picture Show - I was SO in it, and I'm SO glad you loved it! :)
I have attended several of these shows so far this year and it is nice that there is a site for multiple productions in Athens and not just SOT of LFC shows. When the undergraduate playwrights put up productions perhaps those too could be included in discussion.
I really enjoyed the production of "Some Girls" mounted a few weeks ago. The production itself strikes me, partially because it is so intimate and does not rely on spectacle, but rather all the focus is on the beats and actor relationships. Holding the performance in the small space in Scripps worried me at first, but I think it really worked and I'm glad that the audience could be so close and feel a part of the scene.
Well written article.
